Why I Want To Do This Slimmer This Summer Challenge

I met Mir from Two Years To Happy Weight After online through another challenge.  We were both motivated and were successfully losing weight.  The challenge went through changes and it no longer was a good fit for us and while we truly appreciated the help, it just no longer was for us.  But, we still needed a challenge.  And we needed goals. Sure, we had the tools to successfully lose weight on our own but we LIKED being involved in something and love the motivation of being a part of something.

Mir is continuing to do great and is still losing weight!!  I, however, have had a bad month and need a kick in the butt, big time.  She and I pretty much thought of doing some sort of challenge at the same time.  We at first had different views of how to do it but came together with the Slimmer This Summer Challenge

I love to talk with others about things I truly believe in.  If I find something that I believe in, I want to share it with the world.  I go to my religious meetings and we're encouraged to share what we know with others.  I believe strongly in my faith and will never hesitate to share it with others.  I believe that by sharing what I know about the Bible will help others. So I do it. As often as I can.  I love to do the same thing with weight loss.  I want to share with others what I have learned and I want to help people to lose weight.  Now, I don't know everything about the Bible and I certainly don't know everything about weight loss.  Both I am still learning about continually.  I still weigh 210 lbs. so clearly I have not mastered the art of weight loss.  But I still believe that I have help to offer.  I know a lot more than I did a few years ago at over 300 lbs.

When I talk with someone about the Bible, I hear the words I am saying and my own faith is strengthened and I learn from it.  It's the same with weight loss.  When I comment on someones blog about how to eat correctly or offer suggestions, I am hearing those words myself and I NEED to hear those words.  So in helping others, I am helping myself as well. This is why this challenge is so important to me.

This is more than just writing down goals and "hoping" they work out. This is about making it work. Planning, journaling, scheduling exercise, and making some serious changes in our lives. No more talking about it. No more "wishing" that we could lose weight.
Make It Happen.

  3. I totally believe Isaiah's 55:11 promise about God who sends out words through His prophets: "So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."

And I liken encouraging words to that. I believe that words meant to uplift, encourage, educate, and spur on, when offered with good intent and even love, can have a powerful effect. Certainly, it's not like Scripture...but words matter. All we have here online (well, not all, but mostly) is words. So, we have to use them well...and use them to edify, not destroy.

I want this challenge to be like the Isaiah 55:11 for Fatfighters...one full of encouragement, words that bring fruit, uplifting and edification. We should be this for each other, anyway, and certainly with something difficult. Changing our lifestyle is very difficult. (Anyone perfect yet? No, thought not. See?)

  4. Oh, and I should add that words of exhortation and loving correction can play a part, too. Barring cruelty or self-righteous snottiness, there is room for "Hey, you're eating crap. Stop right now! Keep to your target!" :)

  6. We also have to come to grips with the fact that food has become an idol and idol worship is a sin. Ephesians 5:5 is pretty convicting about this. I had an aunt who quit smoking because she said she felt like it hurt her witness. If we can view our appearance as hurting our witness maybe we could get and stay serious about this. I weigh about 215 so I must take a long-hard look at this situation.

  7. I'm in agreement with Downsizers. I think when we're obese, the testimony we give is: "Food is stronger than God. Food is my god."

I've always felt that things in disorder hurt our witness. For me, obesity/food/binge-ing...that was an area where, clearly, I was out of control. How could I say, "God can help you overcome X, Y and Z if I didn't manage to overcome overeating?"

Now, I believe we have many different sizes and body types that are good and sound. The skinny HOllywood ideal is another sort of idol and a vain obssession. But when I could barely walk cause I was so fat, clearly, I was in great disorder and caught up in gluttony.

  8. I am so glad that you asked me once again to join up. When I first saw that I was going to need to do specific things I hesitated big time. I also had a very bad month and am coming off a challenge that wasn't "fitting" anymore. Thinking it may have been the same one, but I am not sure. I love your Biblical focus and I am so looking forward to this challenge. Thanks again for inviting me and all the encouragement you have given me thus far.
    Blessings

  12. Holy balls! I just went to check out your challenge page to make sure I was following all the other challengers and there's like 50,000 of them, lol. This might take me longer than I thought to follow all of them, hee hee. It's pretty cool though because there are a lot of new (to me) ones! :) Awesome!
